Smart Lock 2026 Buyer's Guide
As a rental property manager, you’re probably already familiar with some of the benefits of smart locks—remote management, resident convenience, saving money on missing keys, and more. But with so many options on the market, it can be a challenge to figure out which one best suits your needs. This guide will help you understand the critical features and functions to consider and provide a quick comparison of popular solutions.
As you know, traditional unit door locks with keys often add to your workload with issues like lost keys, unauthorized copies, and time-consuming handovers. New and innovative smart lock solutions offer a modern approach to improving and streamlining property management. Main benefits include remote access control, which allows for instant granting or revoking of access codes from anywhere, and improved security with features like activity logs and unique, time-sensitive credentials. This also simplifies processes like tenant move-ins/move-outs, staff access, and handling after-hours lockouts or emergencies.

To truly make the most of your investment, you should keep an eye out for these top capabilities:

There are a lot of great smart deadbolt locks on the market today, each with their own unique strengths. To figure out which best suits your needs, let’s take a closer look.

Rently Smart Bolt Elite
This next-generation smart deadbolt lock is equipped with Kwikset® SmartKey Security® for instant rekeying and built-in defenses against picking and bumping. It supports multiple connectivity options including Z-Wave, Bluetooth, cellular, and Wi-Fi, plus AES-256 encryption to ensure the highest security standards. This ‘all-in-one’ lock was custom-built for the rental industry and seamlessly integrates with Rently's self-touring service, access control solution, smart home ecosystem, and most property management software—all from one platform.
Strengths: Smart hub independence, multiple connectivity options with Bluetooth fallback, FOB/IC card support, built-in security and rekeying ability with Kwikset® SmartKey Security®, and compatibility with community access control, self-touring, and smart home—all from one platform.

Kwikset Connect 620
Kwikset, a trusted name in residential security since 1946, carries a full line of deadbolt smart locks. Home Connect 620 is their most recent home automation smart lock featuring the Z-Wave 700 Long Range chip, as well as S2 and SmartStart secure enrollment, though it is hub-dependent for smart home. Their hardware also includes their patented re-keying technology, SmartKey Security®, and Microban® antimicrobial product protection.
Strengths: A cost-effective solution for large-scale deployments, advanced security features, and instant re-keying technology.

Yale Assure & Pro2
Yale is a trusted lock manufacturer that has existed for over 180 years. With multiple ways to access and Auto-Lock with DoorSense®, Yale locks offer increased convenience and security. The Yale Assure 2 line is more geared towards consumers or single-family rentals and supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. On the multifamily side, the Yale Pro 2 is completely keyless and features enhanced durability, but only supports Bluetooth-only, Wi-Fi or Z-Wave connection. Both offer keyed and key-free options and require a hub for true code management.
Strengths: Strong integration options with existing smart home systems, flexible hardware options, and modular upgrades for Z-Wave or Zigbee

August Home Smart Lock Pro
August smart locks replace the thumbturn on the inside of a door, making traditional existing deadbolts smarter, more secure and more convenient. These locks allow for keyless entry via a smartphone app, virtual keys for guests, and features like auto-lock and auto-unlock. Requires hub or bridge for full functionality, and the August Smart Keypad is sold separately.
Strengths: Easy retrofitting on existing locks, and compatible with Yale keypads.

Schlage Connect & Encode
Founded in 1920 and now a brand with Allegion, Schlage manufactures a wide range of products, including traditional mechanical locks, smart locks, high security keys, and electronic access control systems for residential and commercial use.
Strengths: Advanced security features and strong reputation in multifamily markets, Encode does not require a hub for easy integration with Wi-Fi ecosystems.
Meet renter demand while increasing cost savings and operational efficiency.
If you're overseeing assets, managing portfolios, or responsible for performance, smart home tech should already be on your roadmap.
By putting in smart locks, property managers show they care about making life easier for their tenants. These reliable devices make home access much easier. Tenants can use their phones or a code for a true keyless lifestyle, meaning no more worries about losing keys or being locked out. Tenants can also let their visitors or maintenance workers in when they're not home, reducing the hassle for your onsite property managers. It's a small change that makes daily life smoother and a minimal investment that provides so many operational benefits too.
Here’s a quick summary of smart lock key benefits:
